detail Jesse Brown (1926-1950) was the first black pilot in the U.S. Navy. He was shot down and killed in action after a crash landing on December 4, 1950 during the Korean War in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Wingman Thomas J. Hadler (1924-2017) made an emergency landing nearby to rescue Brown and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
