detail The German Navy heavy cruiser "Admiral Hipper" attacked British convoys in the Atlantic Ocean in September 1940. On February 1, 1941, Rutherford's plane, which attacked the port of Brest, France, where the "Admiral Hipper" was anchored, from St. Eval base in southwest England, was declared killed in action because it did not return, and all crew members were awarded the Victoria Medal.
