It was originally developed to transport the Soviet space shuttle, Buran, but after the Buran project was canceled, it has come to be used by civilians and is highly valued around the world.
In 2009, the band was changed to blue and yellow.
On February 9, 2010, it was chartered to transport heavy equipment for the Self-Defense Forces' Haiti PKO mission, making its first appearance at Narita Airport.
