The Mitsubishi T-2/F-1 was the first supersonic trainer/support fighter aircraft developed and produced in Japan.
In the late 1960s, development began on an advanced trainer aircraft to train supersonic fighter pilots, and an improved support fighter. The first prototype flew in 1971, and 96 T-2s were produced and used as trainers, as well as aircraft operated by the Blue Impulse and as a hypothetical enemy for the flight training squadron modeled here.
On the other hand, 77 F-1s were produced from 1977, and were used as anti-ship attack aircraft, ground attack aircraft, and interceptor fighter aircraft. Both aircraft were retired in 2006, but their sleek silhouettes remain popular to this day.
The 3rd Squadron's F-1, marked with a Kabuto Musha, was equipped with eight 500-pound bomb dummy shells, totaling about 1.8 tons of bombs, and took off using the entire runway at Misawa Air Base.
