The fifth installment of the Gemini Kawasaki C-1 1/200 series.
The EC-1 is an electronic warfare support aircraft modified from the domestically produced C-1 tactical transport aircraft, and has been in operation since 1986. It is mainly used for more realistic training, interfering with surface-to-air missile units and radar sites through jamming radio waves.
The aircraft is equipped with a J/ALQ-5 electronic jamming device, with antenna housings in the nose, sides and rear of the aircraft, allowing it to transmit jamming signals all around the aircraft. It can also carry two AN/ALE-41 chaff pods under the nose.
It is said that there are two consoles and numerous electronic devices on board, but nothing about them can be seen from the outside.
Only one aircraft has been modified from a C-1 and is deployed at Iruma Air Base in Saitama Prefecture, but its true nature is shrouded in mystery.
The Electronic Warfare Support Squadron was reorganized into the newly established "Electronic Warfare Group" under the Air Tactical Training Wing in August 2014.
