On April 16, 1972, towards the end of the Vietnam War, a US Air Force F-4D (piloted by Major Daniel Edward Cherry) and a North Vietnamese People's Air Force MiG-21 (piloted by Captain Nguyen Hong My) engaged in combat, and the MiG-21 was shot down.
Major Cherry (later retired as Brigadier General) and Captain Mi survived, and met again in the United States in 2007, nearly a quarter century after the end of the war.
