Within Southeast Asia, Indonesia has been growing its economic power due to the soaring prices of natural resources and is focusing on modernizing its military. In 1997, the Indonesian Air Force ordered 24 Su-30MKs to replace the American ones, but the order was abandoned the following year due to the Asian economic crisis. In 2003, the Air Force ordered two Su-27SKs and two Su-30MKs. The 11th Squadron is based at Hasanuddin International Airport on the outskirts of South Sulawesi province, and the model aircraft was received and deployed to the unit in August 2003.
