On March 24, 1999, during Operation Allied Force, in which NATO intervened in the civil war in the former Yugoslavia, the Dutch Air Force shot down a Yugoslav MiG-29 in a head-on attack using an AMRAAM missile. This was the first time that a Dutch Air Force plane had shot down an enemy aircraft since World War II.
