The Black Knights were formed in 1973 and adopted their current name the following year, 1974. Their aircraft fleet has expanded from Hawker Hunters to F-5s and A-4s, then to a two-aircraft formation of four A-4s and two F-16s, before finally becoming the current team of only F-16s.
To celebrate Singapore's 50th anniversary of independence in 2015, an event was held in August, during which the team conducted a three-day demonstration flight at Marina South. The team also underwent a new livery, emphasizing the white and red of the Singaporean flag.

The gear parts are detachable and each comes with a red stand that matches the aircraft color. The canopy can also be opened and closed.
