The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force began operating the HSS-2 in 1963, a Mitsubishi licensed production of the Sikorsky S-61 anti-submarine helicopter.
At that time, the Antarctic observation mission was transferred from the Japan Coast Guard to the Self-Defense Forces, and the S-61 was also adopted as the large transport helicopter to be installed on the new observation ship (icebreaker) "Fuji". It was then used until the "Shirase (first generation)".
In 2000, two HSS-2A aircraft, which had little flight time, were modified to replace the S-61s, and were used until their complete retirement in 2006.
