The government aircraft, a 747-400 that has been in operation since 1991, is scheduled to be retired in 2018 due to aging and changes in maintenance conditions.
The 777-300ER was chosen to replace it. The requirements were that it be capable of direct flights to the East Coast of the United States, have seating space for VIPs and crew, and ensure future maintenance by domestic commercial airlines.
On October 14, 2016, the new aircraft design was revealed, with a white background and red gentle curves, which is a big difference from the previous design. The logos of Japan and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force are also in thin, rounded fonts, giving the aircraft an overall softer image.
