The Saab Gripen was introduced to the Royal Thai Air Force in February 2011, with six aircraft deployed to Surat Thani Air Base in southern Thailand as a replacement for the Northrop F-5, and six C-type (single-seat) aircraft were subsequently introduced in 2013.
Since the southern part of the country is rich in resources such as oil, the aircraft's main mission is said to be to protect these resources from potential threats.While the F-5's scramble response time was 20 minutes, the Gripen, which has excellent STOL (short take-off and landing) performance, has reduced this to 10 minutes.
The aircraft in the model belongs to the 701st Squadron of the 7th Air Wing, and is distinctive for its shark (pracharam) marking on the tail.
