The JAS MD-90 was designed by the late film director Akira Kurosawa with a rainbow motif. The vivid rainbow colors painted on the fuselage lit up the skies in Japan from 1996 to 2004.

The last of the seven designs is Unit 2, which faithfully reproduces the "Kurosawa" signature printed on the side of the aircraft.
