On February 22, 1944, B-17G 42-31322 "Mi Amigo" was heavily damaged during a bombing raid on Denmark and was returning to the UK. It attempted an emergency landing but crashed into the woods of Endcliffe Park in Sheffield, killing all ten crew members. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the crash occurred while trying to avoid children playing near the crash site. For this reason, the crew were posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
