In the early days of the Vietnam War, on October 19, 1966, this aircraft took off from the aircraft carrier Intrepid and engaged in combat with four MiG-17s of the North Vietnamese Air Force. One was shot down with certainty, one was shot down with uncertainty, and one was damaged. This is known as a case in which a piston-engine attack aircraft shot down a jet fighter.
